Mrs. Osie Mary Powell, age 94, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at approximately 1:15 a.m. at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on July 18, 1923 in Boligee, Alabama to the union of William and Elizabeth (McCalpine) Johnson, Sr.; both parents preceded her in death.
On June 28, 1945 she was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Clarence L. Powell, Sr. who preceded her in death on November 16, 2013.
Mrs. Powell retired from the Allen County Board of Education as a counselor after 23 years of service. She was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she served on the Mission Ministry of which she was a founder and the Senior Usher Board. She attended Sunday School, served on the Kitchen Ministry and was responsible for the Communion preparation for many years. Mrs. Powell loved to sew and worked as a seamstress for many years. She also loved gardening, canning, and cooking. She loved her family and enjoyed sharing her history and her words of wisdom.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory a son; Carl L. Powell (Julia B.) of Lima. 2 daughters; Wilma J. James of Lima and Barbara A. Powell-Lomax of Columbus, Ohio. 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. 3 brothers; William Johnson, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Rufus Johnson (Myrtle) of Lima and Smith Johnson of Passaic, N.J. 2 sisters; Bernice Moten of Lima and Eloise Johnson of Passaic, N.J. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by 2 sons; Clarence L. Powell, Jr. and Melvin L. Powell, Sr. A grandson; Jason Ward. 2 great grandsons; Ryan E. Williams, Jr. and Aston D. Hutchins. A brother; Eddie Johnson; 3 sisters; Betty Walton, Myrtle Shambley and Ruby Freeman. A son-in-law; Wilmer L. James.
