Obituary

John A. Turman Jr., age 99, of Lima, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at approximately 7:47 p.m. at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home in Lima.

He was born on November 18, 1925, in Eutaw, Alabama, to the late John A. Turman Sr. and Betty (Means) Turman. Both parents preceded him in death. He attended school through the Greene County School System and, as a young man, helped care for his father and younger brother while working the family farm.

John enlisted in the United States Army in 1946 and served until 1947. He was stationed in Japan as a field lineman. In 1952, he moved to Lima, Ohio. He worked part-time at National Can Retinning Co. and was employed as a machine operator at Teledyne Ohio Steel Foundry, where he retired in 1989. He often worked multiple jobs and took on additional work as needed to support his family. He was a member of Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church later in life and attended until he was no longer able to drive and go on his own.

On September 25, 1954, John married Rosemary Beatrice Stewart, and they remained married until her passing. Together they had four children: Anthony (Alleen Carr) Turman, Teresa (Anthony) Odom, Timothy Turman (deceased), and Patricia (Jodi Petty) Turman. He also raised his stepson, Thomas Jones (deceased). Later in life, he married Cassie Luchini, and they had two daughters: Alexandria (Arlandius Armour) Turman and Alivia (Kaleb Huffman) Turman.

He is survived by seven grandchildren, several great- and great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Thomas Jones; his son, Timothy Turman; five brothers, Eddie, Rufus, Albert, Augusta, and Will; and two sisters, Johnnie, and Layafette.

John had a lifelong love of sports and was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Dodgers, and L.A. Lakers. He could talk sports and rattle off team and player stats all day long. In his younger years, he played baseball, softball, and basketball—and never lost his competitive spirit. He accredited some of his longevity to his activeness in his younger years. He always said to keep on moving.

More than anything, John was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. His love for family was the thread that tied every chapter of his life together, and that love continues to live on in those he leaves behind.

In his later years, he often reflected on the length of his life and would say, "God's got a plan for me that He kept me around this long—and when it's time to go home, He'll call me."

The family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers at Mercy Health Hospice by Compassus and the nurses and aides at Shawnee Manor who cared for John with such love and respect in his final days—you know who you are, and we are forever grateful.
